Walking into a reformer studio for the first time can feel intimidating — the machines look like nothing else in a gym. The good news: a first class is calmer and friendlier than you expect. Here is exactly what happens.
Before you arrive
Tell us it is your first time when you book, and arrive about ten minutes early. Wear comfortable, fitted clothing you can move in, and bring grip socks (we can advise if you do not have any). Have a light snack a while before, not right before.
The first few minutes
Your instructor will show you the reformer: the carriage that slides, the springs that set the resistance, the straps and the footbar. They will check for any injuries or concerns so they can adapt the class to you. Nothing is sprung on you.
During the class
- Movements are slow and controlled, not rushed
- The instructor guides the whole class and corrects gently
- You can always ask to adjust springs or skip a movement
Afterwards
You may feel your muscles worked in places you did not expect — that is normal. Drink water, and if you are new to exercise, give yourself a rest day before the next class. Most people leave their first class taller, looser and keen to come back.
